Welcome to Dental Sleep Medicine of Washington
With over two decades of training and experience in the field of dental sleep
medicine, Dr. Norman Blumenstock, is the only dentist in Montgomery County
that is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Dental Sleep
Medicine.
Our Practice
Dr. Blumenstock has previously practiced both Dental Sleep Medicine and general
dentistry in New Jersey. He has limited his practice to Dental Sleep Medicine
in Montgomery County. He received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College
and his dental degree from Columbia University in 1975. His post-graduate
general practice residency was completed at Montefiore Hospital and Medical
Center, in New York City. From the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Blumenstock
has been awarded both the Fellowship and Mastership Awards. To earn the Mastership
Award he first had to obtain Academy General Dentistry fellowship status by
passing an exam and completing 500 course hours within 10 years. To become
a Master, one must complete 600 additional hours, 400 of which must be earned
through "hands on" courses. Dr. Blumenstock is on staff at the Robert
Wood Johnson University Hospital in the Dental Department and at the Comprehensive
Sleep Center in New Brunswick. He is a charter member of the Sleep Disorder
Dental Society and has been credentialed by the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine
(formerly the Sleep Disorder Dental Society). As the dental consultant to
the medical school faculty practice at UMDNJ, Dr. Blumenstock evaluates those
patients who snore and/or have sleep apnea and would benefit by use of an
oral airway appliances. Dr. Blumenstock is also a member of the American Academy
of Sleep Medicine, the New Jersey Sleep Society, the American Dental Association,
the New Jersey Dental Association and the Middlesex County Dental Society.
Dr. Blumenstock married his wife, Harriet, in 1976 and they have two children.
Patient Care
Dr. Blumenstock and staff function in cooperation with a medical sleep team
that includes Sleep Physicians and other specialists such as Neurologists,
Pulmonologists and Ear, Nose, & Throat Specialists. Since snoring and
obstructive sleep apnea are medical problems, we require an objective medical
assessment as a prerequisite for everyone seeking oral appliance therapy.
Following referral from a physician, our patients are thoroughly examined
in the dental setting by Dr. Blumenstock. All options, advantages, limitations
and consequences are discussed. After fitting the appropriate oral appliance,
several weeks may be needed to correctly adjust the appliance to a comfortable
and effective position. Then, a follow up evaluation by the referring physician
is recommended to objectively document the effectiveness of the therapy. We
like to see all our sleep patients twice per year, long-term during active
treatment to ensure the integrity of the oral structures and continued effectiveness
of the treatment.
